October's Meeting and Info

We'd like to extend a huge thank-you to the Sierra Club speakers, Mrs. Evelyn Merz and Mr. Ron Hayden. Mrs. Merz spoke to us about the Sierra club's mission from conservation to lobbying for environmental causes while Mr. Hayden spoke to us about global warming and energy.
Please be sure to look through the calendar and email us if you'd like to sign-up for an event or if you have any questions.

Things to point out:
* We really need Enviro Club members to lead the campus wide effort on October 24th to kick-off UH's Green Campaign. Please read the information on the calendar. If you can help in any way, email us!

* Under the links you can find the membership form. Please fill it out and return it to us with the subject title "Complete Membership Form." You can also hand it to an officer in person. You can pay your dues ($5) later. When you pay, you get a cool Enviro Club sticker.

* Also on the right links is the t-shirt design. Please pre-order since we still need enough money to order them. They are eco-friendly and the design is great. We need your money if you want one, so you can give it to an officer at any event.

* Our Eco-Mart will be here before we know it. We need you to start thinking of what you can make/bake or help with. It will be an eco fundraiser for an environmental non-profit. We will be selling crafts and organic/vegan baked goods at PGH on Nov. 18. Under the links is the form stating what you can help with. Just fill it out and return it to us or get a form from an officer at any event..or email us what you can help with.

October Meeting

We have a meeting Wednesday October 1st in the Baltic Room of the UC at 4:15.
We will be discussing the month's events (see calendar at bottom of page).

We will have two speakers from the Sierra Club. Mrs. Evelyn Merz, President of the Houston Chapter, and Ron Hayden, chairman of the Stop Coal Campaign. Here is some information on the Sierra Club from wikipedia:

Welcome Back

There are lots of great events planned for this coming year from outings and movies to farmer's market visits and environmental speakers. Be sure you check out the calendar at the bottom of the page.

Our meeting will be held the first Wednesday of every month at 4:15 pm in the Baltic Room of the UC Underground.

Our first meeting is scheduled for September 3rd.

If you are interested in becoming an officer, please be sure to attend the meeting or let us know of your interest.

The Cat's Back ( an event held for freshman the first week of school in order to introduce them to groups and activities on campus) will be held Wednesday the 27th at 4:30 pm at the UC. The Enviro Club will be at the Governors Hall (second floor of the UC). We need volunteers for this.

Have you ever wanted to design a T-shirt?
Have you ever wanted to design an environmentally friendly T-shirt that would make people want to care more about our planet?
Here is your chance!

Requirements:
- One color
- No sleeve designs
- Must include our logo or group name some place
(two color designs may be considered, but only if extremely awesome)

Submissions are due by Wednesday, July 2nd.

Sierra Club Clean Up Dynegy Rally!
Time: Noon Where: In front of the library

Dynegy, a Houston-based company, has the greatest number of proposed dirty coal plants here in TX and around the country! These plants are totally nasty -- combining major air pollution, carbon emissions, and lots of toxic wastes. Come join with UH students to say NO to new coal and YES to clean energy investments!! Tuesday at noon in front of the library!

Wednesday at 3:30pm in the Atlantic Room. The second to last meeting of the year. Speaker on renewable energy.

Saturday:
8-12 pm Eastman Park "Help Keep Houston Beautiful Day" Help us clean up a park 5 minutes from campus. Free food and shirts.

10-5pm "Sustainable Green Expo" at Reliant. Expo focusing on environmental Design, certified green products, and such environmentally friendly concepts. Free admission.

Two big events for our Recycling Campaign are coming up.

On Tuesday the 24th, we will be showing CNN's Planet in Peril in the World Affairs Lounge of the UC Underground. CNN went around the world to highlight environmental issues and one of their 15 locations of focus was Houston. CLEAN aided CNN in highlighting the air quality problems of Houston, and they are now bringing this segment to our campus. Doors open at 6:30, show starts at 7:00 pm. Refreshments will be provided. The other event is the highlight for the awareness part of our Recycling: Accessibility & Awareness Campaign: "Dunk the Recycling" 11-2 pm at Lynn Eusian Park on Wednesday the 25th.

- We will be meeting on Monday at 1:30pm at the World Affairs Lounge to get last minute details worked out and make posters.
- We also need you to help us run the event. We have one hour shifts. Please tell us which times you'd like to work.

We have lots of prizes to give away and environmental educational material. However, to entice you, we have lots of free tickets to the Rockets given to us when we planted trees with them. We will be handing them out to those individuals who take the initiative to help the club out the most.

Houston Rockets and General Meeting

The Houston Rockets want to work with us!! Please read the following information and email us if you're interested in coming:

The Houston Rockets just called expressing and confirming their interest in planting 20 trees on Elgin St this Sunday, March 9 at 3:00 pm. Two players will participate in the event (Shane Battier and Chuck Hayes).

This activity will be taped and shown on the video screen during a Go Green Rockets game on March the 24 or 25 to help promote Keep Houston Beautiful and the Houston Parks Dept.

Also:

Next General Meeting is Wednesday March, 5th at 3:30 in the Atlantic Rm. (74). Our speaker will be Jane Lanping; she will talk about Houston's Air Pollution.

March is UH Recycling: Awareness & Accessibility month. Lots of great events and activities are planned for this campaign. Detailed information coming soon.

Quick Update

We will be collecting signatures for the petition to help our campus become greener on Wednesday (27th) at the UC Satellite from 11:30- 1pm. Please come by at any time and help us collect as many signatures as possible.

Also on Wednesday (27th), we will be have the planning meeting for the recycling campaign. We will meet at the World Affairs Lounge at 3:30pm. Come at any time to give us your input and ideas. We need your support on this!

This Thursday (28th) the Sierra Club will be informing people on their national STOP COAL campaign at the Satellite from 11:30-1pm. We are sponsoring them, so see if you can stop by there to see them.

Public Citizen's of Houston is hosting a Coal Conference on Wednesday and Thursday, see our website for more information if you are interested in attending.

Saturday the 1st from 8-12pm, we will be volunteering at the arboretum. Read through the information for volunteers on our website before coming. If you need a ride or are interested in this, be sure to email us back.

Next meeting is on Wednesday in the Atlantic Room (74) on March the 5th. March is RECYCLING AWARENESS & ACCESSIBILITY month for us. We will be discussing the March calendar; there are lots of activities we have planned. So, be sure you sign up if you're interested in participating (calendar coming soon).
We will also be having a Mother's for Clean Air representative come and speak on Houston's air quality.

Coal Conference

Our club has been invited to attend the Coal Conference in Houston. Here is the information in case any of you are interested:

We are bringing in twelve experts from across the country who have been fighting Big Coal where they live. They provide compelling evidence of Coal's injury to our health and environment. (conference agenda and speakers)

Thank you all who came to the meeting even with the pouring rain. We were lucky to have Dr. Lefer come and tell us the basic reasons why we know our climate is warming and that humans are the main reason for this increase, and what we can do to help. We were able to record the talk, so you'll be able to find the link to his talk and from following speakers soon.

We will be holding a very important planning meeting for the recycling campaign next Wednesday 27th at 3:30pm in the World Affairs Lounge of the UC. We need your ideas and help. Don't worry about showing up late or having to leave early.

On Wednesday next week, we will also be collecting signatures to petition Dr. Khator to pass a resolution to have our campus become greener. Dr. Lefer said that the most important things our club could do this semester were this petition and improving recycling on our campus. So please come out and help us collect signatures anytime after 11:30 at UC Satellite.

We will be doing trail work at the arboretum Saturday the 1st from 8-12pm. Contact us if you are interested in coming. We will likely meet on campus and carpool there.

Lunar Eclipse

Just in case anyone is interested. Our school has an observatory on
the roof of SR1, and they will be open to view the lunar eclipse.
The following is more information in case you are interested.



Weather permitting, we will open the U of H observatory,
Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at 7:00 PM for viewing the lunar
eclipse(total).

If you have a telescope or binoculars please bring 'em. We will be
able to set up telescopes downstairs behind the building and all
additional viewing devices will be greatly appreciated as we will
not be able to use the observatory telescope until the moon is
somewhatoverhead. The total eclipse should begin around 9:00 pm.

General Meeting on Wednesday the 20th

There will be a general meeting this Wednesday the 20th at 3:30pm in the Atlantic Room in the UC. We will discuss activities taking place in the coming weeks including February's campaign (the petition to lead our school to become a greener campus) and the March campaign (to increase and spread recycling awareness on campus).

We will also be having Dr. Barry Lefer come and speak on climate change and cover topics of the petition. So if you have any environmental questions basic, simple or complex, this is your time to learn from or ask someone with a background in this topic. Bring a friend!

Film Screening: Manufactured Landscapes

Join CLEAN as we feature Manufactured Landscapes as part of our 2008 Environmental Film Series. Manufactured Landscapes is the portrait of one man's voyage as it follows celebrated still photographer Edward Burtynsky on a tour of Asia. Burtynsky takes large-format stills of industrial landscapes: factory workers lined up in infinity, giant ships eviscerated, massive recycling dumps, expansive strip mines. His goal is to portray humanity's relationship to nature as we pursue progress. When Burtynsky speaks, he neither celebrates or condemns but simply explores who were are in relation to our planet. We extract things from the environment to survive, and that is damaging the world.

Following the film Rice professor Ron Parry will lead a discussion related to the film.

When: February 20th @ 7 pm
Where: Rice Media Center, Rice University (Entrance #8 located at Stockton and University Blvd.
Fee: None, however, donations will be accepted at the door.

If you are interested in attending the Clinton Global Initiative University this March 14-16 (Spring Break) in NOLA, it is imperative that you fill out the application form by Monday the 18th!
